Trail-Tested: Best Hiking Gear for Day Hikes Under 10 Miles

We hit the trails with 15 different gear combos. These picks kept us light, dry, and comfortable — without the ultralight weight (or price tag).

Trail-Tested: Best Hiking Gear for Day Hikes Under 10 Miles

Day hiking doesn’t need expedition gear. But it also doesn’t mean you should hike in jeans and a cotton t-shirt. After 40+ day hikes across three states, here’s what we carry — and why.

The Golden Rule: Fit > Brand > Features

A $100 backpack that fits your torso beats a $300 one that doesn’t. Measure yourself before buying anything with straps.

The Loadout

Osprey Talon 33 — $140

The 33L hits the sweet spot: roomy enough for water, layers, food, and a light camera, but compact enough that you don’t feel like you’re dragging a suitcase up a hill.

Key features:

  • Integrated hydration sleeve (fits 3L reservoir)
  • Front shove-it pocket for quick-access layers
  • Zip-off hip belt converts it to a 22L daypack

We’ve put 800+ miles on this pack. The frame hasn’t bent, the zippers haven’t stuck, and the shoulder foam still has bounce.

Salewa Mountain Gaiters — $55

Gaiters seem unnecessary until you’re knee-deep in scree and every step sends pebbles into your boots. After that, they’re mission-critical.

These are lightweight, breathable, and the hook-and-loop closure actually stays closed (unlike the cheaper REI co-branded version we tested first).

Arc’teryx Norvan Vest — $150 $170

Layering is the secret to trail comfort. A vest covers your core without restricting arm movement — critical when you’re scrambling or using trekking poles.

The Norvan is wind-resistant, packs to the size of a water bottle, and the synthetic insulation still works when wet (unlike down).

What We Left Behind

  • Trekking poles — great for steep terrain, unnecessary for moderate trails
  • Hard-shell jacket — the vest + a light rain shell in the pack covers 95% of conditions
  • Heavy boots — trail runners + gaiters are lighter, faster-drying, and sufficient for non-technical day hikes

The Verdict
